What Is It Like to Live in Uptown Dallas?

Uptown is Dallas at its most urban. Walk Score of 91 to 96. The Katy Trail running through it. McKinney Avenue anchoring it. If you want to live in a neighborhood where you can walk to dinner, walk to the trail, and walk to your office, Uptown is the place to start.

Walkability

Uptown consistently ranks as the most walkable neighborhood in Dallas, and one of the most walkable in Texas. Most daily errands can be done on foot. There are grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, dry cleaners, and gyms within walking distance of most buildings. The DART rail line runs through the area, providing additional transit access.

The Katy Trail

The Katy Trail is a 3.3-mile paved trail that runs through the heart of Uptown, connecting to the broader Dallas trail system. It is one of the most used urban trails in the country, and for Uptown residents, it is essentially an extension of their living room. Morning runs, evening walks, weekend bike rides. The trail is always active.

Nightlife and Dining

McKinney Avenue is the spine of Uptown's social scene. Restaurants, bars, patios, and live music venues line the street. The neighborhood draws a mix of young professionals, couples, and empty nesters who want to be close to the action without a long commute.

The Housing Stock

Uptown is dominated by condominiums and apartments, with a growing inventory of newer construction. Prices range from the low $200,000s for a one-bedroom in an older building to well over $1 million for penthouse-level property. The building you choose matters as much as the unit. Some buildings have strong reserve funds, well-maintained amenities, and a stable community. Others have deferred maintenance and financial red flags. This is something I evaluate with every client.

The Tradeoffs

Uptown is not for everyone. It is urban, which means noise, density, and limited parking in some buildings. HOA fees are a real factor in your monthly budget. And the neighborhood is active, which is a selling point for some and a drawback for others. The key is knowing what you are getting into before you commit.
